SDel^™ stands for Secure Deletion Utility.  SDel is a utility that provides secure deletion of files from magnetic media.

It works by utilizing techniques documented in a paper written by Peter Gutmann called Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory (click here to search for this paper). 

This paper describes current technologies used to record data on magnetic media, current techniques used to recover deleted data from magnetic media, and how to reduce or possibly eliminate the chances of data being recovered.

There are many so-called "Secure Delete" programs out there that do naïve things such as overwriting a file with random characters (in a single pass), or even by filling files with a single character!  After reading the paper mentioned above, you will see why this is basically ineffective when it comes to secure deletion of data.
